Matt is a US Marine Corps veteran with five years of service as a Persian Farsi and Afghan Dari linguist. He graduated with honors from the Defense Language Institute’s Persian and Dari programs in 2008. After being honorably discharged from the Marines in 2011, he went on to double major in Linguistics and Central Asian Studies at UNC Chapel-Hill. In 2013 Matt was awarded the State Department’s Critical Language Scholarship for Persian and studied the language in Dushanbe, Tajikistan. He currently works as a Persian Farsi, Afghan Dari, and Spanish translator for a Clinical Research Organization.
Matt believes in Foreigncy’s mission of producing highly effective study materials relevant to the linguistic needs of non-native speakers. Foreigncy’s flashcard sets and knowledge assessments are an invaluable language learning tool that he wishes he had access to during his early years of Persian study.
